8 July, 1926.

The Governor recently addressed the Secretary

of State on the subject of the spelling of the name of

■ Colony on the shores of China.

The Second General Asiatic List gives the

spelling as "Hongkong" not Hong Kong".

It turns out however that, no doubt owing to

a lapse on the part of Downie or myself, the local Government was not consulted, and in fact the local preference is in favour of *Hong Kong". On the representations of the Governor therefore the Secretary of State has decided that the official spelling shall

be "Hong Kong".

The List will accordingly I fear have to be corrected at some convenient opportunity.

"Kowloon" remains unchanged.
